Abasi Okambo

This is a portrait of the God “Abasi” from the abacua religion. In the upper portion one can see a pot which is a representation which represents “Tanze” when it goes into the pot of Sikan. On the right is “Abasi” signature. They have a style of writing made of ideographic type known as “Anaforoana” , “Gandos” and “Seals of Strength”.

In Cuba, they are dispersed throughout different groups known as “Plazas”. These Plazas have their own center of gathering and ceremonial rituals. The members of one Plaza do not attend the other ones, they only go to their local one. To them each Plaza represents symbolicly a portion of the land of Calabar.

All their religious liturgies are done in the “Efik” dialect. In this painting, one can see parts of the body of Sikan, hands, breast, skin, and other characteristics, along with the eyes of the fish, Tanze.

In the lower left, is the symbol of the “Efik” tribe that represents not a cross, but “The four winds/four roads of Life”. To the lower
right is the symbol of the “For” tribe, which has a circle representing the circle of life. Sometimes this is represented by a serpent
who is eating itself forming a circle.
