"The Cabildo is Coming" is based on things that I witnessed and lived while growing up in the city of Regla. Regla is a town where since the times of Spain the royal dockyard was based there, also a fishing, and sailor town on the other side of Havana bay where the African influence was very strong.

The "cabildo" is the leadership in the religious group of Cuba's Yoruba people (Lukumi) - During three centuries in the city of Regla, the festivities of the patron saint of Regla (La Virgen de Regla) patron of the Havana bay have taken place, For the Yoruba it represents "Yemaya" the deity that represents the ocean.

These festivities take on a religious procession where the virgen of regla is taken from the church of Regla and in a procession taken by the bay and thru the main streets that lead to the port of Regla. The "cabildo" is at the head of this procession playing liturgics instruments such as: Tambores Bata, Chequere. "Erikis" chantings in the yoruba language that are directed by the "Akon" represented in my painting as the person with the red bandanna.

In my artistic representation I have focused more on the musicians that on the religious ceremony, if you observe in the background you can see the church and where the virgen is being brought down. Also a view of the old Havana (Habana vieja) and the new! though in these times I do not think there is a distinction.
