Chango Tedun

Chango is a dieti of the “Yoruba” religion it is an “Orisha” a saint. The Orishas are intermediates between God and men. Chango is the Orisha which represent War and Thunder. In this painting is called “Chango Tedun”.

Tedun is a region of Nigeria where this sighting took place where he is to have appeared riding a ram. The ram is a symbol of masculinity in many African religions. In Cuba they syncretize Chango with “Santa Barbara” a saint of the catholic religion. This is due to the fact that Santa Barbara was the patron saint of the artillery.

Chango when he lived on earth as a waring King and was very pre-occupied with the wars with his enemies, when he was not in an amorous mood he would become a women or climb on a palm tree where he would stay for various days so his wife would not find him. Since Chango would turn himself into a woman this is why in part he is associated with Santa Barbara.

Many Orishas stayed in Africa and the Cuban Yorubas (Locumi) selected the Orishas that according to them would help them in their new life in the new continent, leaving those that were not useful in Africa.
