From the Yoruba tribe from south Nigera. The Yoruba people that where brought to Cuba came with their religious beliefs in different forms rituals, song and dances. This painting details the “Egun Gun” a character and at the same time, is the name of a secret society. In older times, when tribes were going through some wrestlesness such as bad crops, wars, the tension would reflect in the families and the whole tribe, especially the family and children of the religious council of the tribe. “The cabildo” then decides in a ceremony to evoke the appearance of “Egun Gun”. This starts with a series of dances using a colorful wardrobe and with the help of the priest who interprets the dancing. The motive of the dancing is to spell out bad influences and to bring stability and courage by getting rid of the bad spirits influencing the community. In this representation, one can see the Egun Gun sorrounded by certain masks which represent the bad spirits. The person who represents the Egun Gun wears a wooden polychromed mask because nobody is allowed to see his face. |
